Chambers Fine Coffee cafe, Rhodes, NSW
Industrial chic brings no-nonsense, utilitarian style to this bustling 75 sqm cafe in a new commercial hub. Waller has masterminded a holistic interior, bringing his attention to detail to all its elements, including the functional furniture and lighting, custom seating, shelving, servery, signage, newspaper racks, bread display and a striking lighting fixture.
Combining raw concrete columns, breeze block walls and ceiling with exposed industrial ducting, Waller has created a purposeful, airy space under the soaring 5.4-metre-high ceiling, but, within that, he has also introduced intimate, human scale. This he achieved through zoning with built-in banquettes, booths and bar seating, as well as judiciously placed lighting. Green materials and finishes foster serenity and warmth, enhanced by tan birch joinery, the two offset by the sophistication of black lighting, tables and signage. Drenching the space with sunlight, bifolds open the cafe to the footpath, where passersby can order coffee-to-go.
